Obituary of Jay C. Richards

Jay C. Richards, 69, of Harmony Township, NJ, passed away on Monday, November 13, 2023 at his home.

Born on April 6, 1954 in Glen Ridge, NJ, he was the son of the late Jay T. Richards and Joan L. Walsh Richards.

Jay was a journalist, photographer/videographer, and a baker. Jay’s most recent employment was with Walmart, Pohatcong Township, as a baker.

As the historian for the Warren County NJ War Memorial, J.C. was the author of three books on the Civil War, one book on the Plains Indian Wars/Spanish-American War, one book on the French and Indian War, one book on Warren County’s arctic explorers, two books on World War II, and a 1903 Flood Centennial photo book.  He received the NJ Frontier Guards 1997 Book Award for Flames Along the Delaware: The French & Indian War in the NJ Frontier & Northhampton County, PA.  For years, he had been a photojournalist working for The News of Belvidere, The Morning Call, The Knowlton News, the North Warren News, and as a freelance NJ Superior Court correspondent for WRNJ-News.  He was a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Press Photographers Association. Jay was a history consultant to the Harmony Township Historical Commission. He had also made reenactment gear for museums and British, Civil War, World War One Austro-Hungarian, French and British re-enactors.

Surviving Jay are his three sisters, Janis Hicks (Dave) Palmer Twp., PA, Judy Gawlinski (Scott) Centerville, PA, Jackie Corley, Kunkletown, PA; five nephews and nieces; eight grandnephews and grandnieces; an aunt, Irene Balz, Dover, NJ.

Services will be private under the direction of MacFadden Funeral Home, Belvidere, NJ.
