Obituary of Madeline E. Belby

Madeline E. Belby, 91 of Belvidere, NJ passed away peacefully on Monday, June 11, 2012 at her home with her loving family at her side. Born on December 7, 1920 in Bayonne, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Anna Bergmann Haines. Madeline was the beloved wife of the late Edwin C. Belby who died in 2009. The couple had celebrated their sixty-sixth anniversary in 2008. After raising her four children, Madeline attended and graduated from Jersey City School of Nursing. As a L.P.N., she gave care and compassion to her patients at Jersey City and Fairlawn hospitals. Madeline was a skillful needle-crafter. In the 1960 she served as president of the Blessed Vincent Palloti Chapter of the Order of Martha, a sewing circle of women who hand stitched vestments and altar linens for Catholic Missions using donated wedding and Christening gowns. Madeline's greatest pleasure was spending time with her family. She was the "family champion" pinochle player. She was known for her "Mrs. Belby's" apple and chocolate cream pies. In her later years, Madeline looked forward each day to having lunch with her friends at Belvidere's senior nutrition center. A brother, Frank Haines of Stillwater, NJ had died earlier. Surviving are three daughters; Patricia Tansey of FL, Lorraine A. Jay of CT, and Nancy McGregor of FL; a son, Dr. Michael Belby and his wife Kathryne of Belvidere; twelve grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; a half brother, Bill Haines of PA. Madeline's family will be forever grateful for the care and loving kindness shown to her by her care-giver Annette and the nurses, aides and staff of Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice.
