Roger was born in Catskill, NY on April 17, 1920, the third of four boys to the late William and Winifred Hicks. He grew up in Cementon, NY until age 9 when the family moved to Belvidere, NJ. Roger graduated from Belvidere High School in 1938 and attended Duke University in Durham, NC. He married Bertha (Berdie) G. Nunn of Hackettstown, NJ on June 7, 1941 at the Belvidere Methodist Church Parsonage. They lived in Belvidere until 1984 when they retired to Saranac Lake, NY. Berdie passed on August 19, 1995. Roger moved to Chazy, NY to live with his daughter Kc in 2009 while spending winters in California with his other daughter, Robin. He had been living at Uihlein Living Center for the last two of years. Roger was in the Army Air Corps in World War II and was the pilot of the B-24 Liberator. His plane was hit with flack during a mission to Germany and ended up crashing in Sweden where he served time as a P.O.W. Fortunately all of his crew made it out alive. He received an air medal for his service. That incident made such an impact on the community that a museum was started and a book written about it, entitled "Red Dog." Some of his other activities included being a charter member of the Belvidere Ambulance Corps., former Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop #141, recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, an honorary member of the Belvidere Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow, and former member of Warren Lodge #13 F&AM.. He also was the owner/operator of the former Hicks Printing Company in Washington, NJ. He is predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Berdie Nunn Hicks; his three brothers, Robert, Francis, and G. Homer Hicks; his eldest son, Roger F. Hicks, II.
